About PDFolio
Last updated 18 September 2026
PDFolio is a free collection of more than 60 PDF and document tools that run in your web browser. There is no account to create, no watermark on anything you download, and no usage limit of our own.
What it is
PDFolio covers the everyday PDF jobs — merging, splitting, compressing, editing text, signing, filling forms, redacting, encrypting, and converting to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and images — alongside tools that are harder to find for free: reading a PDF aloud, transcribing a recording into a PDF, scanning documents with a phone camera, and turning typed text into handwriting.
The site is PDFolio. It is an independent project and is not affiliated with iLovePDF, Smallpdf, or Adobe.
How it works
When you open a file, it is read into your browser's memory and processed there, by code the page has already downloaded: pdf.js and pdf-lib for reading and writing PDFs, WebAssembly for the heavier work, and PDFolio's own compression and encryption engines. The result is produced on your device and saved straight to your downloads.
A few tools use machine-learning models for text-to-speech, transcription, and recognising text in scans. Each model is downloaded to your browser the first time you use that tool, cached, and then run locally. Your document is not part of that download.
What leaves your device
For almost every tool, nothing does: there is no PDFolio server that receives files. All document processing is local-first.
The exception is the AI tools — Chat with PDF, AI Summarizer, and Translate PDF. These send a plain-text extract of your open document pages to a PDFolio server-side API, which forwards it to a third-party AI provider (Google Gemini or OpenAI). The extracted text is not stored by PDFolio. See the Privacy Policy for full details.
What it costs
Nothing. There are no ads, no paid tier, and no feature held back behind an account.
Analytics might be used to understand how pages are used — where people click, and where tools are confusing. The tool workspace is masked in those recordings, so the text of your documents is not captured.
